About Melanotan-1 (MT-1)
Melanotan-1 (MT-1) is widely understood to be the same compound now known by the international nonproprietary name afamelanotide — Melanotan-1 was the original research-development name, predating the afamelanotide designation used once the compound progressed toward pharmaceutical development.
Melanotan-1/afamelanotide is a synthetic analogue of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone), a naturally occurring hormone involved in regulating melanocyte activity. It acts primarily at the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), the receptor most directly responsible for stimulating melanogenesis (melanin production) in skin melanocytes.
Melanotan-1 is distinct from Melanotan-2 (MT-2), a separate, less receptor-selective melanocortin agonist studied for a broader range of melanocortin-receptor activity. The two compounds should not be treated as interchangeable.
An afamelanotide-containing pharmaceutical implant, marketed under a different brand name, has received regulatory approval in some jurisdictions for photoprotection in a specific, rare patient population. This approval is specific to that licensed pharmaceutical product and indication — it does not extend to, or imply approval of, this research-grade material. Reliable Research Labs supplies Melanotan-1 (MT-1) as a 10 mg vial of lyophilised powder, tested to ≥99.5% purity by HPLC analysis, strictly for qualified laboratory research.
