About Melanotan-2 (MT-2)
Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic analogue of α-MSH (alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone) — a lactam-bridged heptapeptide structurally distinct from the naturally occurring linear α-MSH molecule. Unlike Melanotan-1 (afamelanotide), which is comparatively selective for the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R), MT-2 is a non-selective melanocortin-receptor agonist, activating MC1R alongside other melanocortin receptor subtypes including MC3R and MC4R.
This broader receptor activity is the key distinction between MT-2 and MT-1: MT-2's research interest extends beyond MC1R-mediated melanogenesis into MC4R-related signalling, which is implicated in both energy-balance/appetite regulation and sexual-arousal pathways in the research literature.
MT-2 also has a notable historical connection to PT-141 (bremelanotide): PT-141 was identified during MT-2-related melanocortin research as a more MC4R-selective derivative, later developed separately as its own distinct compound. MT-2 and PT-141/bremelanotide remain structurally and pharmacologically distinct and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Reliable Research Labs supplies Melanotan-2 (MT-2) as a 10 mg vial of lyophilised powder, tested to ≥99.6% purity by HPLC analysis, strictly for qualified laboratory research. See our Compound Library entry for Melanotan-2 for a wider overview.
